Developmental Editing
4-5 cents per word
This is the biggest picture editing. Grammar is ignored completely in favor of looking at things like plot, structure, clarity of the rules, and inconsistencies or holes in the logic. This is the first type of editing done on a manuscript or copy. I will often send an email or word document detailing the recommended changes rather than leaving comments on your manuscript directly.
Line Editing
3.5-4.5 cents per word
This is late-game editing. Still primarily focused on grammar, I’d be doing slightly bigger picture edits. Misplaced modifiers, incomplete sentences, word choice issues etc. Some of it will be proofreading-style comma errors, but I’ll also ensure tense, tone etc. are consistent as well as recommending rewrites of certain phrases or even full paragraphs.
Proofreading
2 cents per word
Proofreading is usually the final step before publication. This type of editing is the least expensive, but is also only looking for typos, misplaced commas etc., nothing more. You will need a polished final draft for this.
